Edward John Mosby Kelley was the oldest son of Edward (1854-1888) and Ann (née Mosby, 1862-1926) Kelley. He was born in 1Q1885 at Talke in Staffordshire. His sister, Annie Louise (1886-1938) was also born there but by 1888, the family had moved to Audley, a few miles away. That year, a younger brother, George was born but died within 12 months as well their father, Edward.

In the 1901 census, Ann and her daughter Annie were living in Chesterfield, but Edward was now lodging in Derby and working as a bank clerk. In 1911, he was lodging with his aunt, Margaret Kelley in St Thomas’ Road, Derby.

In 1912, Edward married Gertrude Irene Mansfield (1889-1923) at St Joseph Roman Catholic Chapel in Derby but there were no children of the marriage.

The Derbyshire Advertiser of 14 September 1918, reporting his death on 25 August, said that he had joined up 18 months previously. He was then working at Parr’s bank and living (with Gertrude) at 47 Chatsworth Street, Derby. He is buried in Gomiecourt South Cemetery, II, E, 7

Parr’s Bank amalgamated with the London County and Westminster Bank, which eventually became NatWest; Edward is commemorated on a plaque in their St Peter’s Street branch. Whilst he is listed on the Spondon memorial, his links to the community have not yet been discovered. Gertrude re-married, in 1922 to Raymond Johnson but died within the year. Again, there seems to be no connection to Spondon. Edward’s sister and mother remained in Chesterfield until their deaths.
